Hot Torta Subs
a Quick Bite

I can’t count the number of times I have passed by a sign advertising “Hot Torta Subs” and been violently intrigued, but it is definitely more than three. After the Chairman and I discovered that Au Petit Café has selected Wednesday as their random day to be closed, thus disqualifying themselves from the Great Pho-down, it seemed like the best way to salvage our trip to Main St. was to check out this mysterious Torta at Duffin’s Donuts.

Mouse and Bean MoleThe place is… well, sketchy at best. This is definitely not somewhere to take a date. Or anyone really, but its an ok spot to pick up a snack. The Torta sub comes with a wide range of meat choices: chicken, pork, beef, chorizo and egg, and a few others, each for $3.75. They all come on a bun, which has a special name that I can’t remember, that is diamond shaped and about 6 inches long. It was actually quite flavorful, and very fresh. The subs were also topped with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and a mayonnaise like spread, all of which were fine. It even came with avocado, which was a welcome and tasty surprise. The Chairman and I split a chicken and a beef, and while I preferred the beef, he preferred the chicken, but both were surprisingly tasty. My only real complaint was that there could’ve been a lot more meat, but, hey, for under $4, what can you expect. Perhaps they would put on more for a fee? All in all, a pretty tasty little snack, certainly a lot more interesting than Subway. If you are in the area, check it out!

I particularly like their scrambled egg sub… included are lettuce, tomato, thin slices of pickled hot banana pepper and avaocado. A hugely tasty breakfast (or lunch). Highly recommended. They have a second location at 41st & Knight that is much nicer to take a guest to and has the same great subs. They have whole wheat buns for the health-conscious as well.
